Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emergence as India’s longest-serving continuously elected Prime Minister marks a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey. On June 10, 2026, Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days in office, surpassing the record of nation’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who had served 4,398 consecutive days after India’s first general election. Nehru however, holds the record of longest serving Prime Minister overall having remain in office from independence in 1947 to untill his death in 1964. Modi remains the only non-Congress leader to have secured three consecutive mandates at the national level, winning the General Elections of 2014, 2019, and 2024. His political rise transformed the Bharatiya Janata Party from a major national force into the dominant pole of Indian politics for more than a decade.
The numbers tell a compelling story. In 2014, the BJP secured a majority on its own, ending the coalition era. In 2019, it expanded that mandate even further.
